Memorial Day, RIP

well, another memorial day has come and gone. nobody i know did anything to commemorate it, including me. i wanted to--but, in my hometown of gainesville, fla, nobody really cares about the military--except to express how they are the poor, stupid, uneducated stooges of our imperial elite. if i so much as open my mouth and voice an opinion to the contrary, it's like dropping a ham sandwich in front of a muslim.

what a shame.

biking through my neighborhood, which is in the "historical" duckpond area of gainesville, i didn't see a single american flag. i DID see PLENTY of "war is not the answer" signs, proudly stuck into the ground in front of well-manicured lawns. around here, the main historical significance of, say, adolf hitler, is to provide a metaphorical equivalent to the latest republican bogeyman, or in the case of the picture above, nazi = (dead) american servicemen (not to confuse the issue--these graves were desecrated in washington state, not gainesville--story linked above in post title).

as we get further away from WW2 and that generation slips away from us, we're more and more going to be left with only veterans of "unpopular" wars--Vietnam, and our "war(s) for oil". will there be ANYONE left to honor them? the past few generations of our society have been educated in large part by instructors who are under the influence of the cancerous ideology of noam chomsky and his "New Left" ilk. we see how traitors like jane fonda can actively participate in our enemy's propaganda campaign, then come home and win Oscars. we watch as at least 1/2 of the american population claims to "support the troops", but this "support" is essentially an effort to undermine them and make them suffer an ignoble defeat--just to stick it in the eye of the great hegemon...these people never EVER stop to think--to APPRECIATE--how important the sacrifices of our soldiers have been to their ability to speak freely and criticize this country. it was the sacrifices of thousands which freed us from the grip of the British Empire. and it is the sacrifices of many more today which are made to ensure that we do what we can to spread this freedom to the rest of the world, thereby helping to preserve what we have here. we don't always agree with the policies, but we should always remember that the troops don't choose the fights, and we should respect them and honor their memory.

even though both of my grandfathers served in WW2 (one of them actually worked on the manhattan project, to be precise...), i can never remember doing anything special on memorial day...oh, i take that back...maybe we went to the beach or had a cookout or something. hopefully Memorial Day won't become devoid of meaning, going the way of Christmas and Thanksgiving, but i fear it will. and i fear that america won't care, because it'll probably still be a three-day weekend.

"legitimate demands" from American al Qaeda member, Adam Gadahn

this is actually pretty funny. he's not nearly as threatening as Zawahiri, but it is weird hearing this ex-california metalhead talk the jihadspeak.

just released.

"Just Say No" to AMNESTY!

this whole "immigration reform" thing just stinks to high heaven. a) it's rewarding people who have broken the laws of this country...hell, how about some amnesty for my DUI? b) nobody in congress is gonna read it. c) to pass it, the pork is gonna be insane.

our two senators from Florida, Sen. Mel "Traitor" Martinez (R), and Sen. Bill "Spaceman" Nelson are all set to vote for it, unless something drastic happens.

God works in mysterious ways, right?

i've been kicking this thought around for awhile...what if...God was SO AWESOME...that He decided to utilize the advances of the human race to facilitate the return of Jesus Christ?

recently in the news, James Cameron, director of "Titanic" and the Terminator movies, among others, was reportedly preparing to debunk the whole story of the resurrection of Jesus, because he reportedly was shown the tomb of Jesus' family underneath a house in Jerusalem. story here

reportedly, he and his crew were able to secure DNA from what was, in their opinion, Jesus's final resting place. bear with me now...cameron supposedly is attempting to debunk the resurrection story, by creating a documentary or something showing this burial place as his proof that Jesus never rose from the dead...

BUT...what if he decides to go all the way with this? WHAT IF he decides to CLONE the DNA he found...thereby REPRODUCING Jesus? this "Jesus" would still technically be a "virgin birth", right? and, this new version of "Jesus" would have all of the advantages of technical advances such as the internet at his disposal...just IMAGINE the converts that could be gathered through miracles posted on YouTube....hell, He could even have his own myspace page!

His spinmeisters, i mean, His new disciples, could have a FIELD DAY with all of this..."yeah, this was all in His plan...Mary Magdelene actually witnessed a HOLOGRAPHIC IMAGE He projected from the future...now He's back (really!) and he's ready to show mankind the REAL DEAL!!"

i wonder if God ever tires of having to deal with this "faith" issue...maybe that's an old-school concept (like B.C., fer sure). who sez God can't be hip to the new reality?

Why "they" killed Theo Van Gogh

this is not a recent story, but i feel it resonates today, and since it concerns topics that i think about on a 24/7/365 basis--issues of freedom (both political and artistic), security vs liberty, "multiculturalism" vs "melting pot", and, in general, the inability of those of us in "the west" to acknowledge the real
threat posed to life as we know it if we don't come to terms with the FACT that there is an ideology out there, Radical Islam/Islamofascism whatever, that seeks to establish a global caliphate based on the tenets of a 7th century hard-line interpretation of islamic law as set forth in the Quran.

we're really good at clamping down on ourselves and protecting airliners and whatnot (losing our freedom in the process), and pretty good at using our military power to kill the "bad guys" (though the jury is still out on this)...but we're absolutely horrible when it comes to defending ourselves at our most vulnerable area--the freedoms which our relatively civilized society has afforded us. we've been drilled for years and years that we are somehow "bad people" for exploiting the lesser-developed countries of the world. we've all, no matter what country you're from, have had to deal with the fact that at some point in all of our history, we've had racial issues to be collectively ashamed of. i wouldn't argue with that at all. but, when this "shame" translates into a complete paralysis when it comes to identifying those things which can transform our society in ways which we wouldn't like (i.e. sharia law), we seriously need to examine our thought processes.

the picture in the right-hand corner of this post is one of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. she was born in somalia and was raised all over the place--kenya, saudi arabia, back to kenya & somalia, etc...and eventually, to escape a forced marriage to a somali man from canada, she eventually wound up travelling legally to the Netherlands, where she falsified her application to eventually become a legal resident there. she describes this voyage in her autobiography, "Infidel" (which may still be among the bestsellers on the New York Times list), which traces her gradual questioning of the faith she grew up in, Islam, to her final rejection of it altogether, which resulted in her becoming an atheist.

she identified herself as a feminist and to a great extent a supporter of european-style socialism, which in a relatively short amount of time got her elected to parliament in the netherlands. but, her outspoken nature and her widespread criticism of the abuse of women under islam, plus her reaching across the political aisle to embrace those other politicians who shared some of her concerns about the massive influx of muslims into the netherlands (i.e. Pim Fortuyn, "extreme right-wing" candidate for prime minister, a gay man who saw the threats posed to the freedom and open-mindedness of the netherlands due to the increasing population and differing values of muslim immigrants), eventually led to background checks to her own immigration status and her subsequent resignation from parliament.

during this time, ayaan met filmmaker theo van gogh, whose personal radar began to become keenly aware that all was not well in the netherlands, and one of the main reasons were the stresses due to culture clashes between the free-thinking dutch and their new guests, the not-so-free-thinking immigrants. they decided to collaborate on a film (which i have posted at the bottom of this page) called "Submission: Part One". in this short film, which in no way is a cinematic classic, they tell a sad story of abuse and inner struggle of a young muslim woman who pleads with allah to help her understand why this is so, and how the quran sanctions it. it's effectively done using a young woman, partially covered but partially naked as well, her exposed skin covered with relevant passages from the quran.

knowing the explosive nature of this film, ayaan begged van gogh to not attach his name to the credits. this is from the introduction to her book, "Infidel":
"...but Theo was a valiant man--he was a warrior, however unlikely that may seem. He was also very Dutch, and no nation in the world is more deeply attached to freedom of expression than the Dutch. The suggestion that he remove his name from the film's credits for security reasons made Theo angry. He told me once "If I can't put my name on my own film, in Holland, then Holland isn't Holland any more, and I am not me""

in November 2004, after the film had been shown on TV and generated controversy, van gogh was accosted in the streets in Amsterdam, in broad morning daylight, and was attacked by a man named Muhammad Bouyeri, a moroccan muslim, who shot him at least five times, and while van gogh begged for his life, Bouyeri pulled out a butcher knife and proceeded to nearly saw off van gogh's head. he then took another butcher knife and used it to stab a five-page letter into van gogh's chest. the letter was addressed to ayaan hirsi ali. (in the title of this thread i've linked a story about this from the BBC...it's lacking in detail, but i figure the BBC is considered a relatively neutral source of news).

a dear friend of mine just returned from a business trip to the netherlands. while he was there, while surfing the internet, he came across where i was making comments in another forum; comments which to him imply that i'm just a nutty islamophobe with paranoid delusions due to an over-exposure to talk radio. he made some comment in the same forum to the effect of "i just spent the day in amsterdam...there were muslims everywhere...and, guess what? no one was blowing anyone up!".

i don't worry about the "terrorist" aspect of this as much as i do the unwillingness to even acknowledge that there may be a problem down the line. if my friend had just stopped and thought about how he was in a northern european city, and found there to be a lot of muslim immigrants all over the place (instead of people wearing those wooden shoes, perhaps?), and wondered what the effect of their growing political power may be, i would feel a lot better about things.

EPILOGUE:
ayaan hirsi ali, due to the burden of government-provided security because of increasing death threats in her adopted home of the netherlands, recently moved to the United States, where she lives at an undisclosed location and is still under protective watch by dutch security forces.

suggested reading: as well as "Infidel", which i've referenced above, i highly recommend reading "America Alone", by Mark Steyn--i've never laughed so loud while being frightened...

"Playin' in the Band"

the title of this piece provides a link to "my band Big Oil"'s myspace page. come on and be our friend!!

i'm still trying to figure out the point of this whole myspace thing. to me, it's just a website where you go and try to find naked pictures of people (i HEARD that's what happens there!). unfortunately, or fortunately, be that as it may, i haven't come across this AT ALL :(

anyway, i've looked at our page, and all the stuff's out of date...recent shows aren't listed...the shows that are are listed as taking place in delaware or alaska or something...i mean WTF??? then there are the photos that are nearing 3 years old, our almost 4 year old album being featured (without even a mention of our latest album..."spill" (soapy fist records...came out in 2006), and i've NEVER been given access to the site. kinda like our old-school site, www.bigoilrocks.com, come to think of it...

checking both of these out, you would swear we were completely defunct. well, WE'RE NOT. we've just decided to lay low as far as gigging is concerned. but, we still have totally KICKASS practices.

what i hope to eventually do on this blogsite is to download some recordings we've done from practices, put them in MP3 format, and make them available to you--the still non-existant perusers of this blog--plus see if i can do the same with years of video i have from multiple sources. then, when i get totally adventurous, i'm going to try and wrestle control of these sites away from their current masters, who i'm not even sure of their identities...

as satan said through regan in "The Exorcist":
"in time..."
probably the tamest quote ever cited from that, huh?

it's little stuff like this that pisses me off

i know, i know...it's petty.

but...it's little stuff like this which helps perpetuate myths regarding history which over time become "fact". it's a review in the may 17, 2007 issue of the Gainesvlle (FL) Sun's "Scene" magazine of a production by the Gainesville Community Playhouse of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible". everybody KNOWS that the story is a parable of sorts about "mccarthyism" told via a story about the salem witch trials...the thing that really bugs me out is that the author of the article in "Scene", Arline Greer, says this:
"But, it has long been understood that he really was writing about Senator Joe McCarthy's House Un-American Affairs Committee's witch hunt of the 1950s."
is it just me that notices these things? i mean, within the stretch of maybe three words she(?) makes a major innacurate statement which can be caught easily by just simply READING WHAT YOU'RE WRITING (btw, blog title links to story--thanks Doug!). but, of course, it's become almost a point of historical fact that Senator McCarthy (of the US Senate) headed up the House (of Representatives) Un-American Affairs Committee. almost EVERYONE i have ever spoken to believes this to be true. to make matters worse, in all the hoopla over the damage done to individual lives (mostly hollywood types who never missed a day of work due to being "blacklisted", since pen names were utilized) and the country as a whole due to the outrageous abuses of Sen. McCarthy as he headed up the HUAC--people tend to miss a crucial point: there was a bunch of commies in hollywood (which the wonderfully schlocky 70's movie, "The Way We Were", cheerfully illustrates, for example)...and that the extent of the infiltration of, at the very least, communist sympathizers throughout the US gov't was exposed to the people of the US (e.g. Alger Hiss).

i'm not even really condemning people for having communist leanings back then. capitalism, as a system, had not been able to prevent the Great Depression. both capitalism AND communism were and still are very young systems of thought. i just like to see history portrayed correctly, because history that's NOT portrayed in a factual manner--EVEN in a theater review in a stupid small-town paper--can be an insidious agent in regards to the future. brrrrrrrrrrrrr! ...it makes me shiver to think of it...

really, though...am i making too big a deal of this? was it just ignorance on the part of the writer or some sloppy fact-checking at the editorial level? or, should i just totally get with the program and accept the fact that during the 1950s Sen. McCarthy led witch hunts through his toadies in the House of Representatives in the 1940s? help me..

DALTREY sez "bollocks" to global warming concerts

finally...somebody's starting to stand up to THE GORACLE. there's apparently something to all of this "won't get fooled again" stuff...
"My answer is to burn all the f***king oil as quick as possible and the politicians will have to find a solution" -roger daltrey interview in the UK Sun's Bizarre section 5/19/07
okay, i partially agree with him here...especially in the context of this particular quote, which was a piece of a larger block of blistering comments re: al gore's global warming concerts,
"Bollocks to that! The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert"..."We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge i don't know what a rock concert's ever going to do to help"
...his take on celebrity altruism,
"What did we really achieve at Live8? We got loads of platitudes and no action."
indeed...my heart begins to flutter ever so slightly...but before i whip out the champagne i have to disagree with his contention that "the politicians will have to find a solution". the best way they can help is to get the hell out of the way & let the market decide what the people really want. and if these celebrity do-gooders would just ONCE just lead by example and let their actions do their talking instead of having to expose us to the condescending drivel which seems to pass straight from their ears to their mouths without even the slightest hint of a brain having taken a second look at what they are channeling...i mean, when you destroy BIG BUSINESS through draconian measures meant to "solve" a problem which may or may not even be "a problem", well, who the hell are we gonna turn to to provide us jobs? the homeless? <--hope so!...there should be plenty more of them..
